My Cat And The 4th Of July ~ a short poem by Katrina Curtiss 7/3/2020

Upon this calm night, Basura cat came to me,
Asking about our land of liberty
As she looked up at me, eyes filled with cat tears
I thought back to all of my long ago years.

“As a child, I always loved this land of mine
My neighbors have always been gentle and kind
We helped with the wars, we were once great”
I wondered, is it now, really too late?

“Basura,“ I said, as she jumped on my lap
“Be careful of what you read, don’t be a sap
This country, of mine, is the place of our birth
It’s the best place to be, upon on this whole earth.”

“It may seem unsettled to you and me now
But we always survive, because we know how
The Red, White and the Blue is for me and for you
In the end, we will choose the right thing to do.”

“So, rest your weary cat head upon my sleeve
And try your very best to believe
America is our home, that land of the free
So Happy 4th of July, to you and to me.”
