Oh how I miss the world that I used to know,
Wild abandon out the door I would go.
No fear of shootings at my school,
My biggest worry was if I was cool.
We behaved or were paddled and sent to our room,
Upsetting our parents filled us with gloom.
Swearing would get you a mouth full of soap,
We were sent outside to play if we moped.
There were only 3 channels on TV in black and white,
We kissed our parents before saying “good night.”
Astronauts were cool, teachers to be obeyed,
We listened to the radio, sang to the songs that they played.
We all had a full set of encyclopedias,
We didn’t get news from Social Media.
No seatbelts, no cellphones, no one complained,
We splashed in puddles outside in the rain.
I am sad that the world, seems to be in such trouble,
The news has popped by lavender fairy bubble.
Oh, how I miss the world that I used to know,
Wondering where kindness and compassion did go.
***I’ve been trying to stay away from reading the news, but it knocks upon my door. Pretending that I am not home, it waits for me.
What is happening at the Border is tragic; the racist acts of violence are intolerable;
The bickering over human rights is wrong.
