Basura Reads My Mail

My Cat Reads My Mail ~ a short poem by Katrina Curtiss 4/30/2020

This morning, I pulled my cat by the tail
and asked, “Basura, have you been reading my mail?”
She was sitting in letters, all in a mess
Each of them with my name and address

“No”, she replied, as she obviously lied
“I thought they were for me!” she cried and cried
They read “Katrina Curtiss” on the envelope
Oh how with this lying cat, could I cope?

“Basura, there’s something my mom said to me
That even a dog is entitled to it’s privacy
These are personal and private, not meant for you
I don’t understand what you’re trying to do!”

“Basura said, “You’ve had an offer for this and for that
Why don’t they offer anything to a cat?
What’s for you, I think is for me
After all we’re part of the same family tree!”

“I’ve got claws to open them just with one slice
Watch me open another, oh isn’t this nice?”
And with that, she began to wave her tail
Such a nosey bad cat, one who reads my mail
