Basura Tries To Sing

The Cat Who Tried To Sing ~ a short poem by Katrina Curtiss 4/13/2020

My cat was meowing loudly and proud
I asked, “Why are you being so desperately loud?”
She replied, “Like you, I’m trying to sing
It seems like such a remarkably, simple thing”

“Teach me,” she asked as she played on the floor
“I want to sing opera, country and more
I want to be famous and sing with a band
I want to travel the world and meet all my fans”

You’re a little before where you might go
Singing takes practice, there’s a lot you don’t know
Support from your diaphragm, breathing and more
Singing is a gift, not something you buy from a store

As she started to sing she cleared her throat
Make a startling sound, like that of a goat
I couldn’t believe it, what a terrible sound
Thankfully nobody else was around

“Basura,” I said, “Let’s try this, and now try that”
But she is a stubborn, hardheaded cat
“I can do,” she meowed from the window shelf
“If you won’t teach me, I’ll do it myself”

And so, she proceed to sing loud and clear
As the closing of all my neighbors windows, did I hear
Horns began to honk, dogs began to howl
As she continued to sing, I threw in the towel
