My Cat Celebrates Memorial Day ~ a short poem by Katrina Curtiss 5/23/2020

I was listening to Lee Greenwood sing, “God Bless The U.S.A”
Basura cat came up to me and this is what she had to say
“That song makes me feel so good inside,
Fills my heart with loyalty, joy and pride!”

As she jumped on my lap and we began to sing along
Both of us blessed in live in a country that’s strong
Standing on the shoulders of those who fought to keep us free
Sacrificed everything, to protect our Liberty

“I get it.” she said when the song came to an end
It’s such a beautiful message the song has to send
We have freedoms to voice, choices to make
This is still the land of opportunity for goodness sake”

“I love this land,” she said with a tear in her eye
That’s why sometimes when we fight, it makes me cry
I want us to all be like family, to love each other
To treat each other, like a sister and brother.”

“So many gave everything, they gave so very much,
Have we forgotten, have we fallen out of touch?
With what really matters, to the sense of unity
How can I say, Thank You to who gave up so much for me?”

So we threw open the windows and sang really loud
Basura with her chest puffed out, feeling ever so proud
The neighbors’ they joined in, our voices filled the air
And that’s how Basura, said “Thank You” to veterans everywhere.
